TechTonic Justice believes that each of us should have the power to decide where we live, work, and learn. Yet, powerful people in government and industry use AI to decide whether we get can fulfill our basic human needs, such as health care, housing, and economic opportunity. At TechTonic Justice, we blend community organizing and legal advocacy strategies to ensure low-income communities, advocates, and allies at the ground level understand how to identify, investigate, and resist AI and related technologies. 

Our multidimensional approach is rooted in directly supporting local communities and movements to advance justice for those that AI is leaving behind. 

  • Training and Community Education: AI works in the background to make decisions about fundamental aspects of our lives, often leading to unjust outcomes for low-income people. We equip community members, legal aid attorneys, frontline advocates, legal aid attorneys, organizers, and policy people with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and resist current and future AI harms. 

  • Direct Strategic Support Using Legal, Organizing, Narrative, and Technological Expertise: With direct experience fighting back – and winning – against AI harms and unjust automated decision-making outcomes, TechTonic Justice leverages our legal, organizing, narrative, and technological expertise to support legal aid programs, frontline advocates, and community members in their work to litigate, educate, and organize against the use of AI tools. This includes support with litigation, education materials or resources, media, and community mobilization or activation strategies. TechTonic Justice does not provide individualized legal representation.

  • Litigation: Our team of lawyers has led successful fights against powerful people using AI to deny low-income communities health care, government benefits, and K-12 education. We bring that expertise to bear in select legal cases where we can support local attorneys to pursue justice on AI issues that might otherwise be too unfamiliar or resource-intensive to fight alone. TechTonic Justice does not provide individualized legal representation.

  • Community Organizing: We have experienced organizers on the ground in California and Arkansas to develop location-appropriate responses to local issues of AI injustice. Through coalition work, deep listening, and leadership development, we’re developing durable infrastructure to support low-income communities to exercise control over the use of these technologies.

  • Infusing Public Discourse with Ground-Level Perspective: Policy and media discussions about AI often lack the participation of people most harmed by these technologies and their advocates. TechTonic Justice bridges this gap by using our ground-level expertise and connections to ensure that low-income communities and their allies have a greater say in shaping AI policy and media discourse.

  • Practical Guides, Frameworks, and Research: We believe low-income communities, advocates, and allies need useful information about AI injustice that can be acted on promptly to reduce immediate harms and foster long-term systemic change. To that end, we put out practical guides to identify and fight AI injustices, policy proposals that offer meaningful protections, and research reports that can be used to head off emergent harms before they spread too far.
